The machine i.e. folding press (1), has a press table (3) connected to a machine frame (2), and carrying a lower die (5). A press beam (7) is movable along a guiding device (11) on the frame in a direction (12) of the table. A control unit (13) has a control element (15) drive-connected to the beam by a connecting element (24), where element (15) is in the form of piston rod. Another control element (17) in the form of a cylinder tube (18) is drive-connected to the frame or to the table in or below a horizontal reference plane (27) running through a press table support surface (4). An independent claim is also included for a method for driving a press beam of a bending machine.
