A locking device (10) for mounting on two sides (11,12) of a rectangular frame (13) of an openable closure member which is intended to be mounted hingedly in a fixed frame (14) for movement between open and closed positions with respect to the fixed frame (14), in which the device (10) comprises: ```an elongate mounting plate (15) receivable by a mounting groove (16) provided on one side (11) of same rectangular frame (13); ```a shoot bolt (17) slidably mounted on said mounting plate (15) for longitudinal movement between a withdrawn, inoperative, position and an extended, operative, position of engagement with a corresponding keeper (18) in the fixed frame (14) in order to lock the rectangular frame (13) to the fixed frame (14); ```an angle bracket (19) at one end of the mounting plate (15) which is securable to an adjacent side (12) of the rectangular frame (13); ```a housing (20) defined by the bracket (19) to guide the movement of the shoot bolt (17) between its withdrawn and its extended positions, said housing (20) having a shoot bolt clearance (21) between itself and the keeper (18) on the fixed frame (14), upon assembly of the rectangular frame (13) in the fixed frame (14), and which is bridged by the shoot bolt (17) when in its operative position; and ```a stop (22) mounted on or adjacent to the angle bracket (19) so as to project from the bracket (19) in the same general direction as the axis of the shoot bolt (17) and towards the fixed frame (14), said stop (22) being adjustable towards the fixed frame in order to compensate at least partly for the shoot bolt clearance (21) and thereby resist in use any attempt at forced separation between the shoot bolt (17) and the keeper (18) in a direction generally parallel to the axis of the shoot bolt. |
