An apparatus and a method for selecting operation mode based on a scenario in a multi antenna broadband wireless communication system are provided to apply an optimized scheduling way to a terminal by deciding an operation mode on the basis of the scenario. A control unit(201) determines a scenario for a terminal and an operation mode according to MIMO(Multi Input Multi Output) mode information fed-back from the terminal. A scheduler(205) assigns resources to the terminal according to the determined operation mode by the control unit. The control unit determines the scenario for the terminal by referring to a cell size, transfer speed, required transmission rate, and a channel state.
