PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active alanine derivative, capable of producing the derivative which is useful as an intermediate for levofloxacin, or the like, from industrially easily available raw materials in a high yield. SOLUTION: The method for producing the optically active [(S]- or (R)-]alanine derivative expressed by formula (3) (R is a 1-6C alkyl; and X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, and X<SP>3</SP>are each a halogen or H) comprises making steric inversion reaction of an optically active [(R]- or (S)-]2-[(chloromethylsulfonyl)oxy]propionic ester derivative expressed by formula (1) with an aniline derivative expressed by formula (2) proceed in the presence of a base.
