METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR A FAST HANDOVER IN A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A method and an apparatus for fast handover in a communication system are provided to perform a handover more effectively by reducing a delay time until the mobile station determines the handover and performs the handover practically. If an MS(Mobile Station)(201) determines a handover, the MS transmits a bandwidth allocation request message to a serving base station(203). The serving base station transmits a bandwidth allocation message and allocates the bandwidth. The MS transmits An HO-REQ(HandOver ReQuest) message to an uplink resource corresponding to the allocated bandwidth information. The serving base station detects a recommended neighboring base station list from an HO-REQ IE(Information Element). The serving base station obtains a bandwidth and QoS(Quality of Service) to be transmitted to the MS. The MS determines a target base station(205) which is capable of providing the required bandwidth and QoS. The serving base station transmits the bandwidth allocation message for receiving HO-IND(HandOver INDication) message to the MS, and allocates the bandwidth. The MS calculates an uplink time offset for the target base station.
