A film antenna or a mobile communication terminal case or a method of making such a terminal case comprises a conductive radiator 32 formed on a first surface of an insulating carrier film 31 and a protective layer 33a arranged to cover the said radiator 32. The protective layer 33a may comprise a material such as tin to obstruct the transmission of X-rays. The protective layer material may be the same colour as the radiator material to prevent the detection by the naked eye, or laser irradiation, of the conductive antenna pattern employed. A further protective layer 33b, similar to that covering the antenna 32, may cover the second surface of the carrier film31, opposite the area of the film carrying the antenna element. The carrier film 31 may be a thin polymer material and the antenna pattern may be sputtered on to the surface of the carrier film. The film antenna may be attached on to a surface of the case structure 34 or embedded in the synthetic resin forming a casing member 34 by inserting the film antenna, with at least one protective layer, within a mould prior to injection with the moulding material. The film antenna integrated with the casing may provide a robust and compact antenna arrangement allowing miniaturization of a communication device. |
