A method for manufacturing a nanometre-scale titanium dioxide gel which comprises the steps of dissolving and diluting a titanium-containing compound in an acidic liquid, adding ammonia water to adjust the pH to between 5 and 9 forming titanium hydroxide precipitate, filtering and cleaning the titanium hydroxide precipitate, dispersing the filter cake in dejonised water and adding an oxidant or inorganic acid, treating the dispersion at a predetermined temperature to produce a titanium dioxide gel and adjusting the pH of the gel. The titanium compound may be titanium tetrachloride or titanium oxysulphate. The acidic liquid may be hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid. |
