A display device for preventing afterimage of an outer line from a sub-picture and a method therefor are provided to prevent afterimage such as the outer line of the sub-picture displayed on a PDP panel during a specific time by preventing degradation due to a still image signal. A display device for preventing afterimage of an outer line from a sub-picture includes a tuner(10), a demultiplexer(20), a sound processor(30), a speaker(40), an image processor(50), a display unit(60), a key input unit(70), a controller(80), an OSD processor(90), a memory(100), and a timer(110). The image processor processes and outputs a received image signal to the display unit. The key input unit inputs width and length sizes of the outer line, a size variation rate, and size variation unit time data as outer line data of the sub-picture. The memory stores the outer line data of the sub-picture input through the key input unit. The timer counts a display time of the sub-picture displayed on the display unit when a PIP function is operated. The controller controls the image processor to change the width and length sizes of the outer line when the display time of the sub-picture becomes the size change unit time.
