[Also in Division F2] Tubes of plastics foil or of plastics-coated paper formed from a web 2 (Fig. 1) by folding and longitudinal welding in machines 5, 8 are subsequently welded and parted transversely by a device 36, 361 (Fig. 3), and slipped upwardly over a spreading member 9 which carries the tube in a circular path as its welded bottom end is formed to a rectangular block. In the machine illustrated the longitudinal seam is formed by welding jaws 7 which move vertically to feed the tube. The jaws include resiliently mounted portions 20, 201, 21, 211 (Fig. 6) for gripping the tube and are carried by pivots 17, 171 from a collar 24 reciprocated on a vertical column 23 (Fig. 3) under the action of a cam 27. The transverse weld is effected by jaws 36, 361 (Fig. 10) oscillated about a shaft 38 under the control of a further cam 32 (Fig. 3) and carrying parting blades 37, 371. The jaws and blades are raised bodily slightly, when welding and parting are complete, to prevent the cut edges of the web sticking together. The walls of the tube are held apart, as the tube is fed upwardly, by members 15, 151, 16, 161 (Figs. 3 and 6), and these members may include means for spraying the interior of the bag with a liquid or powder sterilizing agent, or may include a radio-active source for sterilization. Each spreading member 9 comprises a pair of hinged plates joined by hinged lower portions 9a (Fig. 10). The mandrels are carried by a head 28 on the column 23 which is rotated by bevel gears 29. The casting for he gear 30, 31 to the machine may include a window 47. A separate housing 48 is provided for the web 2. The welding jaws 7 may be opened and closed mechanically or by magnets. Rollers 4 preceding the folding machine 5 preform grooves in the web. Two bag-making machines according to the invention may deliver to a single conveyer carrying the bags to a filling machine.
