The method for controlling the transverse welding jaws (1, 6) of a vertical plastic bag making machine comprises moving each of them in an oval path (4) which brings them into contact with the tubular film over a vertical section (5) of the path to weld it. The speed of the jaws is adjusted so that the welding time is 0.1 - 0.8% of the total cycle time for the jaws : An independent claim is included for bag making machines operated using the method.
