A digital image processing apparatus for monitoring a user face is provided to acquire and store the reference outline information of the user face from the preview image data of a user face detector according to the settings of a user, thereby photographing an image in the front side only when current outline information from the preview image data of the user face detector is identical with the reference outline information in a photo mode. A method for performing focusing according to a user face in a preview mode comprises the following steps of: acquiring current outline information from the preview image data of a user face detector(S71); storing the acquired current outline information in a DRAM(Dynamic Random Access Memory) temporarily(S73); determining whether the stored current outline information is identical with reference outline information(S75); and performing focusing if the current outline information is identical with the reference outline information(S77).
