APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR FIRMWARE UPGRADE

A device and a method for upgrading firmware are provided to reduce memory usage in a mobile terminal by compressing and decompressing data stored to a memory with a virtual driver, which supports firmware upgrade using a FOTA(Firmware Over-The-Air) technology. An interface module(610) communicates with other nodes. A virtual driver manager(640) compresses information when a request for writing information received through the interface module to a memory is received from an upper layer, and distributes/stores the compressed information to first and second area when the compressed information is bigger than a size set in the first area. The virtual driver manager calculates a position of the information, loads/decompresses the information stored in the calculated position, and transfers the decompressed information to the upper level when a read request for the information is received. The first area is a compressed software image of binary information storage area, and the second area is a reserved area. A controller performs basic process or control over a mobile terminal, and a storage stores software for the control and temporary data which are generated during the execution of the software.
