A method for operating an LBS(Location Based Service) is provided to prevent unnecessary information from being provided according to location movement of a user in the conventional LBS and to prevent infringement of privacy according to unnecessary exposure of location of a wireless communication unit. A method for operating an LBS comprises the following several steps. If a wireless communication unit requests a contents providing server to provide one and more pieces of location based contents(300), the contents providing server extracts one and more pieces of location based contents from a location based contents database(305) and checks whether the location information included in the extracted contents is compatible with an independent type location measurement unit of the wireless communication unit(310). If not in the step 310(315), the contents providing server processes the location information of the extracted contents for being compatible with the independent type location measurement unit(320). If so in the step 310 or the location contents are processed for being compatible with the measurement unit(325), the wireless communication unit selects a storage medium where the location based contents are stored(330). Then, the contents providing server processes the location based contents for being stored at the selected storage medium(335). The contents providing server transmits the location based contents to the wireless communication unit(340) and the wireless communication unit stores the location based contents at the selected storage medium(345). If the location information is not separated from the location based contents when the location based contents is stored(350), the procedure for storing the location based contents is terminated. If a user determines that the location information is separated from the location based contents when the location based contents is stored(355), the wireless communication unit separates the location information from the location based contents and stores the separated contents for rapid search of the location information(360).
