An image scanning apparatus is provided to sense whether to operate the image scanning apparatus by controlling transmittance of each actuator operated within a sensor unit, thereby reducing manufacturing cost and a space within equipment. An image scanning apparatus comprises the followings. A flat panel glass is prepared in an upper surface of a scanning frame(1). A cover is coupled with the scanning frame through a hinge and opens/closes the flat panel glass. An image sensor(4) is prepared in a lower part of the scanning frame, and scans a document. A home location sensing unit(10) senses an initial location of the image sensor. A cover opening/closing sensing unit(20) senses opening/closing of the cover. The home location sensing unit and the opening/closing sensing unit have first and second actuators(12,22). The first actuator linearly reciprocates. The second actuator rotates. Each actuator is operated within a sensor unit(30) comprising a couple of light emitting device and light receiving device.
