A fax apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to enable a data processor to extract only brightness from received color data and convert the color data into mono data, thereby outputting fax data where only brightness is extracted by control of a controller. A receiver(10) receives fax data. A data processor(20) processes the received fax data. An output unit(30) outputs the data processed by the data processor. A controller(50) controls the data processor so as to output the fax data, received in the receiver, to the output unit. The data processor extracts only brightness components from the received fax data. The controller controls the data processor so as to convert color data into mono data if the received data is color data.
