An iris control method for improving sharpness of a dark subject and a photographing apparatus applied with the same are provided to prevent an iris from being opened at maximum even when a photographed subject is very dark, thereby preventing deterioration of sharpness of the photographed subject caused by deterioration of light amount and lens transmittance. A photographing apparatus comprises a lens unit(101), an iris(102), a CCD(Charge Coupled Device)(103), a CDS/AGC/ADC(Correlated Double Sampling circuit/Auto Gain Controlling circuit/Analog to Digital Converter)(104), a DSP(Digital Signal Processor)(105), a recording/reproducing unit(106), a subject brightness calculator(107), a controller(109), a memory(108) and an iris driver(110). The iris controls the amount of incident light. The controller limits an iris open level below a limited open level lower than a maximum open level of the iris.
