An apparatus and a method for changing a channel in a portable terminal are provided to input a frequency easily through a touch screen, thereby enabling a user to search a desired channel easily and listen to the searched channel. A tuner unit(100) receives a desired broadcasting frequency band and measures receive sensitivity. An A/D(Analog to Digital) converter(106) coverts an analog signal, inputted through the tuner unit, into a digital signal. An audio output unit(108) outputs a digital audio signal. A key input unit(102) receives a receiving mode and input mode conversion command from a user. A display unit(104) receives frequency through a touch screen in an input mode converted through the key input unit. A control unit(110) receives the frequency inputted through the display unit, and receives broadcasting in a corresponding frequency band. If receive sensitivity of an inputted frequency band is low, the controller searches an available frequency in a near band to receive the broadcasting.
