PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate switching of observation state, and thereby improve the operability of a microscope. SOLUTION: Optical members, such as a field diaphragm 4, an aperture diaphragm 5, various cubes attached to an observation method switching unit 6, an objective lens 9 attached to a revolver 7, a DIC prism unit 8 and an analyzer unit 13, are inserted/retracted or opened/closed related to an optical path by electrically driving them. The insertion/retraction or opening/closing states of the optical members are detected by a sensor. Various instructions are obtained by an operation part 104. A control part 102 is provided with a memory, and a plurality of insertion/retraction or opening/closing states of the optical members, related to the optical path detected by the sensor, are recorded as the observation state in the memory, when a demand instruction to record the observation state is obtained by the operation part 104. A control circuit 102 controls the optical members to be inserted/retracted or opened/closed, whenever a demanded instruction for setting the observation state is obtained by the operation part 104, so that the observation state is switched to any of the observation states recorded in the memory.
