PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new production method by which a sulfur-containing cyclic olefin resin having high transparency and high refractive index, and useful as an optical material such as various kinds of plastic lenses exemplified by a condensing lens, a prism sheet, a transparent coating material such as a reflection-preventing film and coating material of an optical fiber, and an optical film can economically be produced in high efficiency. SOLUTION: The method for producing the sulfur-containing cyclic olefin resin includes adding a polymerization catalyst by intermittent or continuous addition in the midway of polymerization when carrying out the metathesis polymerization of a specific sulfur-containing cyclic compound.
