PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous dispersion of a novolak type phenol resin, containing resin particles dispersed in an aqueous medium and formed into small particles without using a large amount of a dispersing agent, and having extremely improved storage stability, and to provide a method for producing the aqueous dispersion. SOLUTION: The aqueous dispersion of the novolak type phenol resin is obtained by dispersing the novolak type phenol resin having a 3-30C acid group-containing aliphatic hydrocarbon group as a substituent on an aromatic nuclear by using casein as a surfactant and a hydroxyalkylcellulose as a protective colloid in an aqueous medium.
