<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing system, a printer and a license management method for the printing system, having excellent convenience to a user while managing a license of a printing consumable. <P>SOLUTION: In this printing system, the printer 100 includes: a cartridge information reading means 15 reading cartridge information from a cartridge storage part 33 of a cartridge 31; a license setting request means 17 requesting setting of the license from a license server 200; and a license control means 18. The license server 200 includes: a license setting means 45 setting the license for using the cartridge in response to the setting request; and a license information notification means 46 notifying the printer 100 about license information.
