PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aliphatic primary amine or an aliphatic secondary amine in high activity and high selectivity from an aliphatic alcohol. SOLUTION: The method for producing the aliphatic amine includes catalytically reacting a 6-22C linear, branched or ring-having aliphatic alcohol with ammonia and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst obtained by hydrolyzing (A) a ruthenium compound, and having a ruthenium component carried by (B) a zirconia-composite oxide and/or (C) zirconia having the surface treated with a metal.
