PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for production of a high-purityα-alumina reduced in all of silicon, iron, calcium and sodium contents. SOLUTION: The high-purityα-alumina is produced by: using a firing vessel containing 85-93 wt.% Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and 7-14 wt.% SiO<SB>2</SB>; firing aluminum hydroxide which has Na, Fe, Ca and Si contents of≤0.11 mass%,≤6 ppm,≤1.5 ppm and≤10 ppm, respectively as impurities in terms of alumina and has a mean particle size of≤55μm at a firing temperature of 1,100 to 1,500°C; and rinsing the obtainedα-alumina.
