A method for the production of aminoalkylamines by hydrogenation of the corresponding cyanoalkylamines, involves adding a melt, solution or suspension of the nitrile to a solution or suspension of catalyst in a solvent containing ammonia and optionally other additives at 60-150[deg] C and stirring under hydrogen at elevated pressure. A method for the production of polyamines of formula N(BNH 2) 3 (I) or (H 2NB) 2N-A-N(BNH 2) 2 (II) by hydrogenation of corresponding nitriles of formula N(XCN) 3 or (NCX) 2N-A-N(XCN) 2 in which A : optionally substituted phenylene, naphthylene, methylene, optionally substituted ethylene, propylene, optionally substituted linear or branched butylene, pentylene, hexylene, heptylene, octylene, nonylene or decylene; B : 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbylene, e.g. as listed above for A, with at least one CH 2 unit directly adjacent to the amino group; X : a direct bond or 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbylene as above . The method involves adding a melt, solution or suspension of the nitrile over the course of the reaction time to a solution or suspension of catalyst in a solvent containing ammonia and optionally other additives at 60-150[deg] C, and stirring under hydrogen at elevated pressure.
