The method involves determining post-injection, which is carried out based on a measure for a preset target quantity of injected fuel, by comparison of a measure for actual quantity of injected fuel. A correction value is determined by the measure for the target quantity, and the measure of the actual quantity is determined from a lambda signal measured in an exhaust side. The correction value is determined in limits of a learning procedure, and the measure for actual quantity, the measure for target quantity and the correction value are stored in a learning map (140). An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine.
