The parking assistance system has a device (1) for presetting travel direction order for obtaining a parking position from a vehicle actual position for automatic actuation, holding and releasing of wheel brakes actuated by pressure medium. The parking assistance system is configured such that during a parking process wheel brakes are automatically actuated and held by the device during a vehicle standstill, and the wheel brakes are automatically released by the device, if a start up of the vehicle takes place in a defined and predictable direction of travel. An independent claim is also included for method for direction of travel instructions for a motor vehicle to reach a parking position.
