A device for driving an LED device and a method for driving the same are provided to minimize luminance distortion of images by compensating for image data based on levels of data signals and an illumination area of a display panel. A device for driving an LED(Light Emitting Display) device includes a display panel(1), gate and data drivers(2,3), and a data converter(5). The display panel displays images. The gate and data drivers drive respectively plural gate and data lines, which are implemented in the display panel. The data converter extracts a 3-color compensation signal based on 3-color data and an illumination area of the display panel, compensates for the 3-color data according to the extracted 3-color compensation signal, and generates data signals according to the compensation result.
