A device and a method for driving an LCD device are provided to reduce power consumption by modulating differently source data of higher and lower regions of a saturation reference gray scale. A device for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes an LCD panel(10), a panel driver(20), a backlight(30), and a backlight controller(40). The LCD panel includes plural LCD cells, which are defined by plural gate and data lines. The panel driver detects a frame maximum gray scale and a frame reference gray scale in source data which is inputted, modulates the source data based on the frame maximum gray scale and the frame reference gray scale, and displays the modulated data on the LCD panel. The backlight radiates beams to the LCD panel. The backlight controller controls the backlight according to the frame reference gray scale.
