A recording medium, a recording/playback apparatus and method, and a defect management method are provided to read address information of a spare area and address information of a system data according to the control of the first controller to manage data recorded in a system data area effectively. The pickup part reads out address information of a spare area and address information of a system data according to the control of the first controller when a defective area exists. A second controller(12) records data in a recording medium and transmits a recording or playing command to the record/playback part. An AV decoder(17) decodes a signal read from the recording medium according to the control of the second controller. An AV encoder(18) converts an input signal into a signal of a specific format according to the control of the second controller and transmits the signal of the format to the signal processing part.
