<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact belt type continuously variable transmission having excellent vehicle mounting performance in which a motor different from a main power source is connected to either of a driving pulley and a driven pulley. <P>SOLUTION: The belt type continuously variable transmission 9 is equipped with: the driving pulley 35 and the driven pulley 36 having belt grooves 39, 40 formed thereon, respectively, by fixed sheaves 37, 41 mounted immovably on rotational members 33, 34 in the axial direction, and movable sheaves 38, 42 movably mounted to the rotational members 33, 34 in the axial direction; and a transmission belt 45 wound around the belt grooves 39, 43. The main power source 1 is connected to the driving pulley 35, and the motor 48 having one or both functions of a motor and a power generater is connected to one of the driving pulley 35 and the driven pulley 36.
