PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength detecting device and a wavelength detecting method, in which the size of device will not be enlarged even when a minute wavelength over wide range is to be detected. SOLUTION: The wavelength detecting device 1A is equipped with an external resonator type semiconductor laser 10 for emitting the laser light PL (photo luminescence), a wavelength detecting unit 20 which detects the minute change of the wavelength of laser light PL and discriminates the wavelength of the laser light PL over wide range to output a detecting signal SD and a laser control unit 27 which feedbacks a control signal CT produced based on the detecting signal SD to the external resonator type semiconductor laser 10. The wavelength detecting unit 20 comprises a grating 2A which effects the diffraction of one part of the laser light PL or a light beam PR and a light detector 3A which receives the light beam diffracted by the grating 2A and outputs a detecting signal SD. The wavelength detecting unit 20 detects the wavelength of the laser light PL based on a setting of a distance between the grating 2A and the light detector 3A and the setting of the grating pitch of the grating 2A.
