PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing an isocyanate by a reaction of corresponding amines with phosgene in the gas phase in which, once the optimum residence time has been reached, the reaction is effectively stopped within a short time and simple separation of the isocyanate from the remaining components of the reaction mixture can be achieved with the result that an isocyanate mixture having a high isocyanate content can further be obtained and the process can be carried out in a simple, compact apparatus with minimal energy input. SOLUTION: The reaction mixture containing the isocyanate is guided from a reaction chamber through a cooling zone in which a liquid is injected to stop the reaction.
