A method for fitting a safety line cable on a tensioner, wherein a section of the cable is crimped in a sleeve ( 11 ) formed by the tensioner. According to the invention, the following operations are carried out: passing the cable through the sleeve ( 11 ), keeping the cable under tension at its end projecting from the sleeve ( 11 ), crimping the cable in the sleeve ( 11 ). A tensioner for a safety line capable of carrying out this method is disclosed. Application to the installations for the safety of personnel working under dangerous conditions.
