An extract of the pericarp of Litchi chinensis Sonn. is especially suitable for use in oxidative hair treatment to improve the shine, to improve the texture, and to improve the color retention of hair and to protect the hair from UV radiation. The invention also relates to a method for the oxidative treatment of hair, whereby an oxidative cosmetic agent, which contains an oxidant in a cosmetic carrier, is applied to the hair and is rinsed off the hair after an exposure time. The method is characterized in that directly before the oxidative cosmetic agent is applied, a cosmetic agent, containing an extract of the pericarp of Litchi chinensis Sonn. in a cosmetic carrier is applied and is optionally rinsed off after an exposure time, and/or the oxidative cosmetic agent additionally contains an extract of the pericarp ofLitchi chinensis Sonn. The invention allows the above-mentioned properties to be obtained without impairing the result of the oxidative effect of the agent.
