Packages(P) are conveyed on a transporting system comprising a package transporting wheel(1) with holding stations one behind another. The number of holding stations is greater than the number of welding tools(6) which move relative to the holding stations. Welding tools(6) are mounted on a rotating tool supporting wheel(5). A stepped gear transmission unit(7) lies between the package transporting wheel(1) and the tool supporting wheel. The gear unit is fixed on the package transporting wheel and has a reduction ratio which ensures that the tool support wheel movement relative to the transporting wheel is matched to the number of packages to be processed and the process duration. The drive shaft(8) of the gear unit is driven by the the package transporting through a pinion(10) on the drive shaft meshing with a fixed sun wheel(11). A separate drive system powers the gear transmission unit. The number of holding stations is a whole number multiple of the number of welding tools, in particular twenty eight holding stations on the package transporting wheel act with seven welding tools on the tool supporting wheel. An independent claim is included for a process for attaching pouring spouts onto and/or closing card and plastic packages using ultrasonic tools. Packages are conveyed on a circular path by a package transporting wheel(1) and the speed of adjusted as required. During processing the welding tools run synchronously with the holding stations and after a processing stage each tool moves to the adjacent holding station.
