COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN OF ROCK DRILLING BIT

A steady-state mixed thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic computer model is used to design earth boring drill bits, and in particular, to optimize the design of the journal and thrust bearings (41) within the earth boring drill bit (11). The model incorporates the texture of the bearing surfaces,, asperity contact, surface thermoelastic deformation, the temperature-pressure-viscosity relationship of the lubricant, and the angular misalignment between the journal and the bearing.
