PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a high track density and a high linear recording density, by narrowing the effective recording track width of a magnetic recording medium, thinning the film thickness of a magnetic layer that contributes to playback, and suppressing an accompanying reduction in the playback signal amplitude. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is constructed, in such a manner that a magnetic wall moving layer 10, a switching layer 4, a memory layer 3 are stacked, in this order, the magnetic wall antimagnetic force of the magnetic wall moving layer 10 is relatively smaller than that of the memory layer 3, and a Curie temperature of the switching layer 4 is lower than that of the magnetic wall moving layer 10 and that of the memory layer 3. Only in a region limited in the width direction of a recording track center, will the magnetized state of the memory layer 3 be transferred to the magnetic wall moving layer 10 through an exchange coupling via the switching layer 4. In regions of both sides of the area, a reflecting layer 5 is inserted between the magnetic wall moving layer 10 and the switching layer 4, to increase the reflectance of light that entered from the magnetic wall moving layer 10 side.
