A device and a method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device are provided to embody peak luminance by converting 3-color data into 4-color data using a gain value and color compensation coefficients. A device for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes an LCD panel(102), data and gate drivers(104,106), a data converter(110), and a timing controller(108). The LCD panel includes plural unit pixels having red, green, blue, and white sub-pixels. The data and gate drivers supply image signals and gate on voltages to the respective sub-pixels. The data converter generates a histogram using gray scale difference of 3-color input data supplied to the red, green, blue, and white sub-pixels, converts the 3-color input data into 4-color data, which is supplied to the red, green, blue, and white sub-pixels, using color sense coefficients and a gain value from the histogram, and outputs the 4-color data. The timing controller supplies the 4-color data to the data driver and controls the gate and data drivers.
