PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is high in reliability and functionalities. SOLUTION: In the patterned medium, which comprises a substrate 1; a soft magnetic underlayer formed on one principal surface side of the substrate; a non-magnetic film 4; an intermediate film; a recording layer; a first protective film 108 formed in contact with the recording layer; a second protective film 208 formed in contact with the first protective film; and a third protective film 308 formed in contact with the second protective film, with the recording layer having a patterned structure formed by forming a magnetic film in contact with a projecting and recessed pattern of a non-magnetic material. The main component material of the first and the third protective films is defined as carbon, and the second protective film is defined as a coating film. Thus, since the adhesiveness between the carbon and the coating film is high, peeling of the carbon and the coating film can be prevented and the coating film absorbs impact as a buffer material.
