To control a saddle stitcher, an inserting machine or the like, a data processing network ( 1 ) is provided in accordance with the present invention, whose nodes are formed by the motor control units (3<SUB>1</SUB>, 3<SUB>2</SUB>, 3<SUB>3</SUB>, . . . , 3<SUB>n-1</SUB>, 3<SUB>n</SUB>). A coordinating node ( 2 ) provided in the network ( 1 ) sends out data frames serving for control purposes and receives data frames presenting status messages from the motor control units, on the basis of which it makes control decisions.
