PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation device useful as a portable navigation device carried by a person and also as a car-mounted navigation system set in a car, and having high manipulability, and to provide a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: The navigation device includes a first detection means 14 for detecting the acceleration of a mobile body, a second detection means 16 for detecting the running direction of the mobile body, a third detection means 18 for detecting the three dimensional position of the mobile body, a position calculation means 20 for estimating the position of the mobile body based on outputs from the first, second and third means 14, 16 and 18, and a collation means for determining the current position of the mobile body by collation of the position of the mobile body estimated by the position detection means 20 with a map.
