PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for preparation of a pyridine-methylsulfinyl compound which acts as a proton pump inhibitor and is known as "prazoles" useful for the treatment of pathologies related to an increase in gastric secretion. SOLUTION: The invention relates to a method for preparation of a compound represented by formula (I) (wherein Q is =CR<SB>8</SB>- or =N-; and R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>8</SB>are each a substituent) or a salt thereof. The method comprises the reaction of a precursor compound with a reducing agent selected from a trivalent phosphorus compound, an oxidizable solvent and a sulfonic acid chloride; and, optionally, the conversion of a compound of formula (I) to another compound of formula (I) or a salt thereof.
