The invention relates to a bumper cross-member comprising an elongated body (10) having a three-dimensional configuration, which is formed from several sheet metal elements (1, 2) which are joined by means of welding and subsequently shaped. The three-dimensional configuration comprises a non-uniform open cross-section along the length of the body (10). The inventive method comprises the following steps consisting in: joining several sheet metal elements (1, 2) to one another by means of welding in order to produce a flat raw part, and shaping said raw part in order to produce the body (10). According to the invention, the part is shaped by means of cold or hot stamping. The sheet metal elements (1, 2) can be joined using different welding techniques, either in an adjacent or stacked manner, can have identical or different thicknesses and can be made from the same type or different types of steel.
