An image capturing apparatus and an image capturing method are provided to improve a focusing performance on a person in capturing an image of the person, and improve the operation of acquiring an optimum exposure and a color balance performance. An image capturing device waits for an operation of a shutter button while displaying video(S102). When the shutter button is pressed, a face detecting circuit detects face region data and detects the size of an object from the face region data(S104). A face distance calculation circuit calculates the first subject distance from an image capturing apparatus to the subject(S106). An AF detecting circuit detects a focused position of the subject in the obtained face region data and that of a central region of a captured image(S108). A subject distance calculation circuit acquires the second subject distance from the image capturing apparatus to the subject(S110). A reliability calculation unit calculates a reliability value of the face region data by comparing the first and second subject distances(S112). A face recognizing unit recognizes a subject of the face region data as a face(S114). When the face recognizing unit recognizes the subject of the face region data as a face(S116), a face display unit displays a face display frame around the subject recognized as the face(S118). A CPU determines the subject with the recognized face as a focusing region. |
