A device for separating off a load area in a motor vehicle is proposed, comprising a flexible, planar dividing element (18) which bounds the load area (12) and is stretched across the motor vehicle. According to the invention, the dividing element (18) is provided in its circumferential edge region (22) with a circumferential cable (26) which, in securing regions of the dividing element (18), can be connected to clamping devices which are fixed to the bodywork so that kinetic energy which is applied to the dividing element (18) is absorbed at least partially via the cable (26). The dividing element (18) can thus be used in a flexible way and can be stowed in a space-saving fashion in the uninstalled state.
