PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator and a projection type video display device capable of preventing irregular color from occurring on a projected video while using a plurality of solid light sources having different directivities. SOLUTION: The illuminator includes the plurality of solid light sources, and an optical modulation element to modulate a plurality of color light beams emitted from the plurality of solid light sources, and includes an optical unit provided on a common optical path where the plurality of color light beams pass between the solid light source and the optical modulation element and guiding the plurality of color light beams to the optical modulation element side. The plurality of solid light sources include a first solid light source to emit a first color light beam having the wide directivity, and a second solid light source to emit a second color light beam having the narrower directivity than the first color light beam, and the optical unit makes irradiation area by the first color light beam and irradiation area by the second color light beam uniform on the optical modulation element.
