The method involves limiting a reference torque delivered from an internal combustion engine (10) to a preset torque in reaction to an error during the control of internal combustion engine. The speed of the internal combustion engine is determined based on an operating variable of the internal combustion engine. The preset torque is modified based on the determined speed of the internal combustion engine, where the determined speed is the maximum permissible speed for operating the engine. The maximum permissible speed is provided based on a signal (FPG) from an accelerator pedal sensor.
