The method involves generating a sound-influencing signal based on a detected sound emission of a sound damper (3) in an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine (1) in a vehicle. The sound influencing signal is injected into the sound damper in the exhaust gas system. The sound influencing signal is generated depending on an operating mode of the internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is operated in a 2-stroke-method and/or 4-stroke method and/or 6-stroke-method. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a sound influencing device comprising a sound damper (2) a computer program with a program code for executing a method for influencing sound.
