The telephone has a radiation source (1) e.g. infrared radiation source, provided in a housing, and a gas detector (2) e.g. optical detector such as infrared sensitive radiation sensor, and thermopile detector. The radiation source and the gas detector abut either at an intermediate chamber (3) through a radiation-permeable window, or at a closed intermediate chamber, where the chamber (3) is freely accessible from an external side. The closed intermediate chamber is coupled to an ambient atmosphere. A reflector is assigned to the detector for focusing radiation.
