The method involves detecting of exhaust gas emission levels, and sending of data signals and emission levels to a memory area in an electronic control unit. The data signals are compared to the emission levels with calibratable values in a memory in the electronic control unit, which indicates engine exhaust gas-emission levels in different engine speeds and engine torques to determine whether an error condition exits. An error in the memory area is recorded only with a RAM (104).
